“The approach at Caron Renaissance often feels like you have been cut off from the knees down. You are held accountable for your diseases of co-dependency. They are tough on the patients and their families because people die from this disease.
My son crashed and burned in a matter of 4-5 months. It was as if we barely survived a plane crash. We had to remain in lockstep with the Caron Renaissance treatment team; they were there for us. In Families Anonymous, we learned that work on ourselves is what would get us through. Renaissance staff holds the patient and the family accountable. They aren’t trying to be mean. They teach you to detach with love. The 1,000 lb. elephant in the room is that you can die from this disease.
When I met graduates of the Caron Renaissance program, they were full of joy, recovery and happiness. I learned that the longer my son stayed in treatment, the greater his chance of recovery. Today, he is 15 months sober. He is amazing. He actively participates in Caron Renaissance aftercare and is starting college in the spring. He chose to do the hard work.
